Event Profile
Pushkar Camel FairPushkar Camel Fair is the largest camel fair in India and is organized in the Hindu month of Kartik (October-November). It starts on Ashtmi, 8th day of Lunar Calendar, and ends on Poornima, the full moon day. The Pushkar fair of Rajasthan combines live stock trading, horse dealing, pilgrim destination and religious festival, all in one. The venue of the fair is Pushkar, a small town near Ajmer in the state of Rajasthan. Some of the major attractions of the fair are acrobats, comedians, traders, musicians, folk dancers, sadhus (ascetics), etc.

The first half of the fair is mainly concentrated on camel and cattle trading. However, in the second half, it takes a religious overturn. It is the time for the devotees to take a holy dip in the sacred waters of the Sarovar (lake). It is believed that the holy dip frees one from the cycle of birth and death. Numerous stalls are set up at the Camel fair of Pushkar, where you get everything, ranging from the splendid handicrafts of Rajasthan to items of daily need. You can even find accessories for everyone ranging from women to cattle, camel and other animals.

Adding to the fun are the camel and horse races, which leave you wanting for more. If you are an animal lover, then make sure to attend the camel judging competitions. The folk music echoing throughout the fair lends an air of serenity to it. Last but not the least, the live shows of the folk dancers are sure to win your heart. The Camel fair of Pushkar lasts for a number of days and attracts not only the locals, but also people from different parts of the country. So, if you happen to be in Rajasthan in October-November, do not miss this amazing fair.
